Is the Earth Flat? The Truth Behind the Flat Earth believers | The numbers, The Reasons, and the Reality | The Boss Post

Why do some people still believe in flat earth?

"Can there really be people in the world who truly believe in the theory that the Earth is flat?"

"Unfortunately, the answer is yes."

10% of people in the US

3% in the UK

and 7% in Brazil

really believe in this theory

Antarctica is surrounded by high and snowy mountains and if you cross these mountains, you will fall down to the ground, this is a misconception of those who have the theory of flat earth

And if this theory is considered, then these questions may also arise in the mind that if the earth is flat, then what will happen to the sun and moon?

How do we get night and day?

What do the Bible and the Quran say about flat earth?

We will discuss all these in detail so that if there is any ambiguity in the minds of our viewers, it will be removed.

On September 28, 2002, 46-year-old Mike Hughes, who lives in the US, broke a strange world record. He was a limousine driver by profession and he tried to make a long jump in his limousine, specifically, a 130-foot long jump.

Jumping that far in a 3,000-kilogram vehicle sets a world record for a limousine ramp jump, but Mike didn't stop there. 12 years later, in 2014, the limousine driver used a rocket he built in his garage to soar 13,000 feet into the air. He was injured when the rocket crashed. But the limousine driver wasn't satisfied and in 2016, he revealed his plan to cross the boundaries of space and eventually launch a rocket from a height of 32 kilometers using balloons.

In the US, he became known as Mad Mike because only a crazy person would attempt such a dangerous and insane stunt. Mad Mike needed money to perform his new stunt, so he started a Kickstarter campaign.

The limousine driver started asking for donations from people, which amounted to more than $100,000. But unfortunately people were not interested in his project. He could only raise $310. Only two people gave him money. But after some time, Mike said something that suddenly made him receive thousands of dollars in donations.

He said that he did not believe in science. He only believed in what he saw with his own eyes. He claimed that his real purpose behind this stunt was to go into space and check whether our Earth is round or not. The limousine driver told the people that he believes that the world is in a different shape than what we have been taught in these programming centers and in the public school system.

The edge that blocks all the oceans

is a 150-foot-high ice wall

which is Antarctica.

Limousine driver Mike Hughes has impressed the Flat Earth community.

Mike said he believes in the Flat Earth theory. Yesterday the sun and moon were in the sky at the same time, which in my opinion is impossible on a round sphere. I don't think anyone can convince me that the world is round, because they have no evidence.

Limousine driver Mike Hughes further provoked the people of his thinking community by saying that it must have made you ask yourself, are there really that many stupid people in the world who think that our Earth is not round? The answer is, unfortunately, yes.

"And what is the Earth?"

"Flat"

"The Earth is flat!"

"My sister tells me that the Earth is flat and stationary."

"The Earth is definitely not round."

Look at this 2021 survey, about 10% of the US population actually believes that

the Earth is flat, not round.

If you look at the age distribution, the new generation, Generation Z and Millennials, they believe it relatively more, but this conspiracy is not limited to the US.

In the UK, about 3% of people

believe that the Earth is flat.

In Brazil, about 7% of people,

in Bulgaria 8%,

and in Tunisia a PhD student studying geology was trying to submit a thesis on how the Earth is flat.

Even educated people believe such stupid things. In fact, most people who believe it are not uneducated. They can read and write. They are educated. They watch videos on YouTube and discuss their beliefs, but still for some reason they This simple fact has been rejected as false.

(Let's understand this flat earth theory in depth)

What does our earth look like according to those who believe in the flat earth theory?

Let's look at some popular questions related to this theory.

Does the Bible or the Quran say anything about this?

And why do people believe in such a stupid theory?

In today's world, with the widespread use of the internet and countless airplanes and spaceships, there are countless ways to prove that our earth is actually round and spherical.

But do you know what's interesting?

People who lived thousands of years ago had an idea about this without these modern conveniences. Around 500 BC, the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras looked at the moon and the sun and realized that they were spherical. Based on his insight, he deduced that if they were spherical, our Earth would also be spherical.
Then came Aristotle, around 350 BC. He noticed that during a lunar eclipse, the Earth's shadow fell on the moon in a circular shape. At the same time, he also observed that when he watched ships sailing at sea, especially ships on the far horizon, as they came towards us, we first saw the top of it, then the middle, and finally the bottom. This tells us that the Earth is curved and round.
Then, in 200 BC, Eratosthenes came along and buried some sticks in the ground and observed their shadows at noon. He kept one stick in the same place and moved the other one a kilometer away. There were some differences in the shadows of the two sticks and based on that, he did some calculations and estimated that the circumference of the Earth would be somewhere between 37,500 kilometers and 50,000 kilometers. Later we found out that the actual circumference is 40,075 kilometers.
Then until the 1600s when Isaac Newton came along, it was assumed that the Earth was a ball and no one doubted it.
And then in 1865, a great man came along, Samuel Ruth Botham, and he wrote this great book.
Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not A Globe.
This book is now considered a classic by the flat Earth community.
Let's look at some of Samuel's main arguments in this book.
This man said that whenever he went to the sea and looked far away, the horizon always looked flat.
If the earth were really round, it would not be flat but curved. In addition, in all lakes and oceans, the surface of the water is flat and not curved. And on the earth too, he said that the earth does not appear curved and no matter how far away things are, we can see them.
In his opinion, since we do not stop seeing them, the earth is flat and not round.
He called his point of view Zetetic.
Only things that can be seen should be believed and other scientists and philosophers were disappointed with his logic.
He proposed a new theory that the earth looks like it is flat with the North Pole in the middle and at the end of it are the high ice mountains of Antarctica. If you cross these mountains, you will fall down to the ground.

In the imagination of those who believe me in the flat Earth theory, the Earth looks something like this.

Some people who believe in the flat Earth theory believe in another version.
They claim that these icebergs in Antarctica will never end. They continue indefinitely. And what happens to the sun and the moon in this flat Earth theory?
How do night and day come about?
They have presented an interesting model about this. According to them, the sun and the moon move in a circular path above the earth and their light falls like a spotlight on an area.
According to the latest model presented by the flat Earth community in the US, the sun and the moon are only 50 kilometers in diameter and they orbit the earth at an altitude of 5,500 kilometers.

But in reality, as we know, the sun is about 150 million kilometers away from the earth and the moon is about 400,000 kilometers away from the earth.

To prove the summer and winter seasons, Mark Sargent, who is almost the king of this flat earth community today, claims that sunlight is hot and moonlight is cold, and the evidence for this is quite interesting.

He says that during the day if you compare the temperature inside and outside your house when you stand in the sun it is hot, but if you do it at night comparing the temperature inside and outside your house with the moon in the sky, the temperature outside is cold.

Wow, what logic! Anyone can say such stupid things. It's no big deal But the problem arises when you accept your own foolishness as truth without any second thought or verification

Samuel was not alone in his time. The modern flat-earth movement arose in the late 1800s. Another famous book from 1885 is 100 Proofs That The Earth Is Not A Globe written by William Carpenter. From the beginning, these people used religion to justify their nonsense. They deliberately misinterpreted Bible verses. The Bible says in Revelation 7:1

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth...

Now these four corners can be interpreted metaphorically, just as we talk about all the corners of the world.

We are not actually talking about the corners of the earth, we are not claiming that the earth has corners. It is just a metaphor. But what did these people do?

They interpreted it literally, claiming that since the Bible mentions the four corners of the earth, it must mean that the earth is a square or a rectangle.

If you look at a map from 1893 on Google, it shows the Earth as a square

First image of Earth by NASA

with an angel at each corner, just like Genesis 1:6

"And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters.

And let it divide the waters from the waters."

Flat Earthers claim that the "waters above" are the heavens

and the "waters below" are the seas.

And there is a dome that divides the two, and thus in their model, the Flat Earth is in the shape of a dome. A book was published on this in 2016. Firmament: Vaulted Dome Of The Earth.

Today, about 70% of people who believe in the Flat Earth theory also believe in the dome theory, believing that this dome-shaped firmament covers the Earth. They believe that the Earth looks like this.

This was also done with the Quran.

Quranic verses were deliberately misinterpreted

in order to "prove" their flat Earth theory.

Sura 71 verse 19 states

"(Allah) Who made the earth for you

like a spread out carpet;"

Those who try to misinterpret it say that

"like a spread out carpet" means completely flat.

But today's educated Muslim scholars say that

"spread out" means spread out in all directions, that the earth was made wide and accessible and usable for us humans so that we could walk on it and live on it,

This is why most Muslim and Christian scholars since the 9th and 10th centuries AD have believed in a spherical Earth. However, there are some flat Earth believers from time to time.

Some people even say that there is no such thing as gravity and dinosaurs never existed. According to these people, if you look at the UN logo, it shows a flat Earth because of the map on the logo.

Who will tell these people that any logo on paper will always be in two dimensions. It is not possible to make a spherical shape in two dimensions.

But if you use such arguments with these people, you will get such strange answers.

They will point out why Antarctica was not drawn on this map and why was it not? Because it is a conspiracy. It proves the flat Earth theory for them.

Now, let's talk about their mindset.

Why do some people believe such absurd ideas to be true?

There are 4 reasons behind this.

The first reason is convenience.

The explanation that seems simple and easy is accepted by people because it is easy to understand.

For example,

You hear about global warming.

On one hand, I can give you a detailed explanation and show you lots of data charts showing how CO2 levels have been increasing over the years and that is causing global temperatures to rise.

But on the other hand,

a person tells you to ignore all the data and tries to prove how cold it is today.

This could be the coldest day in the last 5 years. And that also proves that global warming is a lie.

Tell me, which of the two explanations would you believe more?

Hopefully, most of you will say that the first explanation is more believable because it was backed by data and presented on a scientific basis.

But unfortunately there are many people who just take the easy way out, they choose the easy explanation and this explanation is easy not only because of its simplicity but also because people don't have to take any action themselves and there is nothing to fear. If you accept that there is no such thing as global warming, then you don't have to change yourself. The fear that you may have about global warming will also disappear.

That is another reason why it is the easy way out.

The second reason is intuition.

Things that seem right to you at first glance, because of your intuition, your inner sense tells you that it is true, you start to believe it more.

For example,

in the case of a flat Earth, people think that there is no need to think about gravity, mathematics, or science.

Rather, they prefer to believe only what they can actually see. When they look around, the earth around them appears flat.

They see a flat earth as far as they can see, and they take this to mean that the earth is also flat. However, in reality, the earth is so big that its curvature is not easy to see with the human eye, which is why these flat-earthers think that since we can see distant buildings, it must mean that the earth is flat. They claim that on a curved earth, we would not be able to see distant objects.

People start to trust their inner senses and observations more than science.

There is a psychological effect at work here

which is called the Dunning-Kruger effect.

According to this, if people have little or no knowledge in a field, they exaggerate their knowledge and abilities. They start believing that they know a lot about it.

When in reality they know very little or nothing. As the level of knowledge increases, people realize that they barely know anything about it, and gradually people start underestimating their own abilities and when they are really knowledgeable in this field, they realize that they have a lot of knowledge about this field.

People who spread conspiracy theories like Flat Earth often say, "You should do your own research. You should come to your own conclusions." Now, that's not wrong in itself. Everyone should do their own research. But when it's taken to the extreme, if you tell a less intelligent person to do their own research, who may not know how to do research, they start to trust their intuition. They start to believe whatever they think is right. We should always remember one thing, that understanding complex problems and complex issues is not always an easy and intuitive process. Before Samuel wrote his book in 1865, he did an experiment in 1838 to prove the existence of a flat Earth. There is a river in England called Old Bedford. It's a small river. He went into this river and put a 3-foot-high flag in a boat. One special thing about this river is that it flows straight for a long time. So at one end he sat with a telescope 8 inches above the water. He said that if the earth was really round, he should stop seeing the flag after a certain distance. He followed the flag and the boat for 6 miles and he could still see the flag and this is his simple drawing on which he concluded that since he could still see the flag, he concluded that this meant that the earth was flat.

At first glance, this explanation might seem correct.

But Samuel was relying on convenience and intuitive thinking. He did not take into account the complex process called refraction. In fact, he could see the flag because light was being reflected.

You learned in school that when light passes through different densities, from warm air to cold air, it bends. They weren't actually looking at their flag. They were looking at a mirage of the flag. This is the opposite of what happens in the desert. Because of the reflection of light, we think there is a body of water nearby when in reality we see the sky.

This is popularly called a mirage.

Five years after the publication of Samuel's book, another flat-earther named John Hamden announced a challenge in 1870.

Anyone who could disprove Samuel's experiment would be given a prize of £500. A famous biologist of the time, Alfred Wallace, accepted this challenge and designed his own experiment to disprove it. He went to the same river and placed a black stripe on a bridge over the river at a height of 13 feet. Then he went 6 miles away from the bridge and looked at it with a telescope, but this time to eliminate reflections, he built a pool in the middle. At the midpoint of 3 miles, a pool was installed with a disc at a height of 13 feet and a disc at a height of 9 feet. On a flat Earth, the black stripe on the bridge would not be visible through a telescope because it would be blocked by the upper disc on the pool in the middle.

It would be in the line of sight of the telescope.

But when they actually looked through the telescope, they saw something like this. They saw a black stripe and both discs were visible above it. This could only be possible if the earth was curved.

On the pool in the middle, both discs were visible above the black stripe. Although he won the bet, the challenger never paid the promised amount, because he claimed that there was no written contract and he used this excuse to escape.

Here comes the third reason,

Critical thinking. Most people who believe in such conspiracy theories either do not use their critical thinking skills or do not have the necessary critical thinking skills.

What does critical thinking actually mean?

To always look at your beliefs and ideas critically.

If you are doing your own research and reaching a conclusion, ask yourself once:

Are there any other possibilities?

Have you left anything out?

See things from multiple perspectives What are the other possibilities in this case?

Question your beliefs and ask yourself why you believe what you do?

Are your opinions about something based on your internal biases?

It is important to keep questioning yourself If Samuel had done this, he would have been able to find the flaws in his experiment If he had really stuck to his experiment, he would have tried to repeat his experiment using different perspectives and methods to strengthen his conclusion.

But the problem is that it is not easy to do this. It is very complex and difficult to question yourself, to see different perspectives, to believe your first instinct without thinking critically. That is what people who fall for such conspiracy theories do.

The fourth reason, is distrust of authorities and institutions and it is quite interesting. Because on the one hand such people blindly believe in conspiracy theories,

But on the other hand they also blindly doubt people on the other side. If you tell the flat earthers that NASA took this picture of the earth, they will not trust it because they do not trust NASA.

If you show them science books, they will say that these books are published by the government and governments cannot be trusted.

No matter what the basis of your evidence is, they will reject your evidence. According to them, the entire education system of the world is conspiring against them. According to them, America, Russia, China, Pakistan, all countries are involved in this conspiracy.

But if they use a little critical thinking here, they will realize how terrible their logic is. Why would countries like America and Russia, which oppose each other on almost every issue, suddenly work together to show that the earth is round?

The first photograph of the Earth was taken on October 24, 1946

But conspiracy theorists will refuse to believe the above image released by NASA.

The United States launched a suborbital rocket that went up to an altitude of 104 kilometers

And took such pictures. Almost 20 years later, on May 30, 1966,

This picture was taken. This picture was taken by a Soviet communications satellite.

Incredibly, both the United States and the Soviet Union, who were bitter enemies during the Cold War, came together just for this conspiracy.

You may think this is nonsense but ask these flat Earth believers if they believe it. According to them, the rockets launched by these space agencies were actually nuclear weapons that were trying to break the dome of the Earth.

"Both sent their rockets high enough to take these pictures."

"What they saw scared them."

"How do we know they were so concerned about what they saw?"

"Because the US and Russia immediately started firing their weapons straight up."

"And they kept firing for the next four years."

Losing faith in the government is not unheard of, but believing whatever the government is saying

thinking whatever the scientists are saying is all nonsense

This is sheer madness and it reminds me. Let’s go back to the story of Mad Mike, we were talking about him at the beginning of the article, using the theme of flat Earth in his campaign, he raised about $8500 for his stunt. In 2018, he reached a height of about 1,900 feet and this time he calmly descended with a parachute. He was slowly moving towards his goal. But his next flight on February 22, 2020 proved to be his last. As soon as he launched himself in his homemade rocket, his parachute burst as the rocket reached its peak and started to descend. Mike was trapped inside and thus he died a horrible death. After his death, the whole truth came out that he never believed in the flat earth theory. He was just a stuntman who did crazy things to push his limits. He pretended to be a flat earth believer so that he could fool the flat earth community and get donations from them.

This stuntman could have easily fooled these people to get donations from them. So would it really take something as complex and sophisticated as science to mislead them?

If you believe in any of these conspiracy theories, wake up and start paying attention to these four reasons. Otherwise, you never know when someone will come along and fool you like this.
